New York’s top 2-year-olds will vie for the bubbly as a field of nine will square off in Saturday’s $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct.

The second half of a 3-year-old racehorse’s season can produce surprises. Sometimes, a 3-year-old coming out of the Triple Crown will run out of steam and other times a new sophomore will step forward and announce his presence with authority like “Nuke” LaLoosh in the classic baseball movie “Bull Durham.”

If it all works out over the next five weeks, the Nov. 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic will serve as Round 3 in the epic rivalry between the 3-year-old stars Sovereignty and Journalism.

But will it be their last meeting?

With the Oct. 31-Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar drawing ever closer, Tom Pedulla offers takeaways from five Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series races from this weekend that will help shape the talent-laden fields at the season-culminating event.

Coming off an eight-month layoff between races, it would have been fair to wonder how Imagination  would perform in his return to competition at Santa Anita Park Sept. 28.
