On a yielding turf last Saturday course at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York, turf females dueling in the Grade 1 Dunkin’ Diana Stakes delivered a thrilling finish.

The first marquee race for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds since the end of the Triple Crown series back in early June will be held at New Jersey’s Monmouth Park Saturday, when a competitive field squares off in the $1 million NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes.

As much as the 3-year-old male division has a clear-cut leader in Sovereignty, the sophomore filly division is still searching for a leader.

In the pantheon of influential names in California racing, Clement L. Hirsch ranks up there with Bing Crosby, Dr. Charles Strub, and Elias “Lucky” Baldwin, owners and breeders whose passion for the sport translated to a lifetime of work on its behalf.

The $1 million NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes July 19 is the marquee race at Monmouth Park and drew a strong cast of runners expected to compete in the 1 1/8-mile Grade 1 stakes for 3-year-olds.
