The Runhappy Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs may be a six-furlong race, but it’s not your daddy’s turf sprint. While some turf sprints are contested on hard courses with tight turns that favor speed horses, the Runhappy Turf Sprint is contested on a hilly, deep course and starts at the top of the one turn, all of which could work against speed types.

One week after an exciting renewal of the Kentucky Derby, bettors will be treated to a race of a similar sort when 14 of the best Canadian-bred 3-year-olds vie for victory in Saturday’s $1 million Queen’s Plate Stakes at Woodbine.

Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve 1-2 finishers Authentic and Tiz the Law are among four North American horses situated among the best racehorses in the world according to the latest rankings presented by Longines.

Saturday’s 161st Queen’s Plate at Woodbine brings together the top Canadian-bred 3-year-olds for what is an annual high point of racing north of the border.

The $1 million Queen’s Plate is the oldest continuously run race in North America and is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, followed by the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie and then the Breeders’ Stakes on turf at Woodbine.

This year’s Breeders’ Cup takes place on Nov. 6 and 7. Starting two months ahead gives us a bit more time to pick some winning horses, but just what do you need to look for when making your selections?
