all in The Sport

Thoroughbred racing, like any other sport, has been home to the exploits of scamps, scallywags, and scoundrels.

At the other end of the scale of human character and integrity, few people in the sport have ever been as genuinely beloved and admired as Bob and Beverly Lewis.

Their marriage was a heartwarming tale of love and devotion that lasted 58 years.

Trainer Brad Cox needed just one word to succinctly express what he witnessed in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes.

“Greatness,” he said.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic is often thought of as the All-Star race for American horse racing, and for good reason. With its massive purse and enormous prestige, it’s designed to bring together the top horses at the end of each season.

Following the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Brad Cox had a clear top-10 prospect for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve with probable champion 2-year-old male Essential Quality. Less than a month into the New Year, it would appear he now has two Derby contenders.

Given the popularity of turf racing, it came as no real surprise when Gulfstream Park added a Pegasus World Cup turf race to complement its multi-million dollar Pegasus World Cup Invitational on dirt.
