Saturdays are alright with Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado this winter in South Florida.

When all four contenders in the Feb. 4 $196,000 Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes turned in the stretch at Santa Anita, Bob Baffert had the rare luxury of winning the race before the race was even finished.

A millionaire on the racetrack, but even more popular as trainer Steve Hobby’s longtime stable pony, Chindi was euthanized Feb. 2. The snow-white gelding was 29.

Hobby said Chindi’s physical condition had deteriorated for several weeks, adding he believes it was because of a neurological disorder triggered by his advanced age, rare to reach for a Thoroughbred racehorse.

The Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park has become a key Southern California prep race on the path to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and served as a springboard in 2012 for I’ll Have Another as he swept the Derby and Preakness Stakes.

BloodHorse news editor Byron King presents his latest Derby Dozen, with a look at his leading contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 6.
