Horse racing’s equivalent of the Academy Awards takes place Thursday, Jan. 23 with the 54th annual Eclipse Awards, held at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Fla. The Eclipse Awards recognize the best of the best in American Thoroughbred racing and are voted by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), staff at Daily Racing Form, and members of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB).

After earning the Jockey Guild’s top jockey of the week to start off the new year, Kendrick Carmouche tacked on five more wins last week and now leads the 2025 Equibase standings for North American jockeys by wins and earnings with 13 wins and $589,050 in earnings (all statistics through Jan. 14).

The Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve gets a tad more important Saturday as the Lecomte Stakes ushers in a slate of preps worth a total of 42 qualifying points. The first five finishers in the two-turn test at Fair Grounds will receive 20-10-6-4-2 points in descending order.

Bred by Bluegrass royalty, Lexington’s Calumet Farm, Tennessee Moon began her career in California, first with trainer Leandro Mora, then with Doug O’Neill. The daughter of Calumet’s multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter Ransom the Moon failed to earn a victory in five starts on the West Coast before being sold privately to Emerald Downs-based trainer Justin Evans. The change would help.
