Equibase Standings: Coal Battle, Hernandez, and Maker Take Early Lead

Coal Battle started off his 3-year-old campaign in style with a victory in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park by four lengths Jan. 4 for trainer Lonnie Briley. The Coal Front colt set a pressured but measured pace under Juan Vargas in the front-running win, earning an 84 Equibase Speed Figure and another 10 points on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

The Smarty Jones was his second consecutive Kentucky Derby prep win and third straight stakes victory. With $146,250 in earnings this year, Coal Battle leads all horses in North America in the standings and ranks second on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 20 points.

Juan Hernandez came out of the starting gate flying in 2025 with eight wins from 22 starts and $409,460 in earnings. He leads all jockeys by purse earnings in the standings followed by Julien Leparoux in second and Irad Ortiz Jr. in third.

On Jan. 4, Hernandez had five wins from nine mounts including a win in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes aboard Barnes for trainer Bob Baffert. Hernandez leads the Santa Anita Park meet with 12 wins and $705,278 in earnings.

Leparoux, a recent member of the 3,000-win club, is off to a hot start in 2025, riding at a 42% clip with five wins from 12 starts and $380,919 in earnings. On Jan. 5, Leparoux had three wins from four starts at Oaklawn Park, including a win in the Tinsel Stakes aboard Seize the Night for trainer Eddie Milligan Jr.

Irad Ortiz Jr. is carrying over his strong performance from last year. With eight wins, seven second-place finishes, eight thirds, and $363,930 in earnings from 37 starts so far this year. Ortiz Jr. is dominating the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet, winning at 29% and leading all jockeys with 48 wins and $1,822,825 in earnings.

With seven wins and $453,295 in earnings so far this year, Mike Maker leads the 2025 trainer standings followed by Steve Asmussen in second and Mark Casse in third. Maker is winning at a 21% clip this year from 34 starts with wins at Turfway Park, Fair Grounds, and Oaklawn Park. He finished 2024 with 196 wins, including seven graded stakes, and ranked eighth overall by wins and eighth with $15,975,546 in purse earnings.

Other notable performances include Barnes, who romped by 5 ½ lengths in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita to remain undefeated from two starts. The 3-year-old son of Into Mischief was bought as a yearling for $3.2 million by Zedan Racing Stables. Barnes is currently second in the 2025 standings with $120,000 in earnings.

After going 0-for-3 in 2024, Seize the Night is off to a hot start in his 6-year-old campaign, winning the Tinsel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Sunday by half a length at odds of 8.30-1. He is currently third in the 2025 standings behind Coal Battle and Barnes with $97,125 in earnings.
