Al fin Nueva York tiene su héroe. Un héroe de carne y hueso … se trata del purasangre de carreras Tiz the Law, el castaño que bajo el mando del jockey boricua Manuel Franco se impuso de manera solvente en el primer peldaño de la triple corona en el marco de la edición 152 del Belmont Stakes de esta emblemática ciudad.

Tiz the Law, el consentido del Sackatoga Stable, pensionado del experimentado entrenador de mil batallas Barclay Tagg, se convierte así en el primer equino de carreras nacido en la Gran Manzana, en ganar tan importante prueba.

El hecho es de tal trascendencia, en medio de las inocultables consecuencias que ha dejado en el mundo el coronavirus, que el mismísimo gobernador neoyorquino, Andrew Cuomo, no pudo contener la emoción que denota un renacer de esperanzas: "Felicidades al propio Tiz the Law de Nueva York y al jockey Manuel Franco, por ganar el Belmont Stakes 2020. ¡Es el primer caballo criado en Nueva York en ganar Belmont desde 1882!”, expuso  henchido de orgullo.

"Tiz the Law corrió por todos nosotros y ganó, encarnando lo que significa ser New York Tough. Fue un Belmont diferente este año. Gracias a todos por hacer que este evento de carreras icónico suceda", agregó visiblemente emocionado Cuomo.

Esta declaración reveló que ha nacido un nuevo héroe llamado Tiz the Law, el caballo que rompió el maleficio e inscribió su nombre en la historia de la excelsa hípica de los Estados Unidos. 

La carrera se desarrolló con parciales de 23.11 para el 1/4 de milla; 46.16 para la 1/2 milla; 1:09.94 en los 3/4  para pasar la milla en 1:34.46 y parar los relojes en 1:46.53 para  1 milla y 1/8, lo que convierte al hijo de Constitution en Tiz Fiz por Tiznow, en el inequívoco protagonista del tiempo más rápido empleado para la distancia en lo que va de año en tan prestigiosa arena. 

Aunque excelente marca está casi un segundo por debajo del récord de pista que ostenta el gran Secretariat desde el 15 de septiembre de 1973.

Se avizora un nuevo triplecoronado

Según las impresiones del destacado fusta puertorriqueño, de comprobada experiencia y efectividad con siete años de recorrido en las principales pistas estadounidenses, que irradia una sana y responsable confianza, y considera que el caballo terminó muy bien la prueba y puede desempeñarse mejor en los dos pasos que restan para emular la hazaña de la Triple Corona que hoy tienen en la historia a Sir Barton, 1919; Gallant Fox, 1930; Omaha, 1935;  War Admiral, 1937; Whirlawy, 1941; Count Fleet, 1943; Assault, 1946; Citation, 1948; Secretriat, 1973; Seattle Slew, 1977; Affirmed, 1978; American Pharoah, 2015 y finalmente Justify en 2018.

Expuso Franco que se sintió ganador sobre la media milla de recorrido, porque “traía mucho caballo, solamente estaba esperando el momento indicado para hacer mi movida final”; y vaya que se materializó la estrategia.

Cuando tuvo a bien hacer correr a su conducido, el jockey consiguió respuesta positiva para que el de los rombos rojiblancos, identificado con el número 8 en su gualdrapa en este primer paso de la triple corona, se impusiera muy bien ante los nueve rivales de turno.

“Lo primero que sentí al cruzar la meta fue que se cumplió uno de mis sueños, ganar una carrera de la Triple Corona. Es ahora un sueño hecho realidad”, indicó más sereno aunque aun flotando por la novel experiencia. 

Manuel Franco cree firmemente e insiste en que con Dios por delante sí hay triplecoronado este año. “Estoy bien confiado en el caballo y además sé que estoy en buenas manos con el entrenador Barclay Tagg. Tiene la experiencia y ya ha pasado por esto antes”, aseveró pleno de confianza y madurez.

Quizás sea la oportunidad para que el preparador, de 82 años de edad, se reivindique ante la historia, ya que en 2003, a pesar de haber perdido por medio cuerpo con Funny Cide, ganó tanto en el Kentucky Derby como en el Preakness Stake. Quedó a un paso…

Dios podría conceder merecido premio al tesón, a la experiencia y a la entrega de toda una vida dedicada al hipismo: la gloria de la triplecorona, que pudiera significar la guinda de oro en la destacada y longeva carrera como entrenador de puransangres a don  Tagg.

Al látigo boricua le pareció increíble la felicitación emitida por el gobernador Cuomo, porque “todos sabemos que en New York estamos pasando por momentos difíciles y son estos eventos los que sirven para despejar la mente de los fanáticos; más aún cuando un caballo New York Bred se alza con la victoria en esta clase de carreras. Es algo grande, ya que no pasaba hace 138 años”, puntualizó.

Con esta gesta, escenificada en un Belmont Park, inusualmente silencioso, sin taquillas de apuestas y sin los famosos Belmont Freeze con que se refresca el público en días sin pandemia, Tiz the Law deja registro de cinco logros en seis actuaciones más un decoroso tercer lugar, posiciones cimeras que abonan a su cuenta un total de 1.480.300$, lo que representa mucho más de 10 veces su costo. Una bendición para Jack Knowlton, su dueño, y para Nueva York que al fin tiene su héroe.

Tiz the Law has landed the first leg of the Triple Crown

Finally, New York has its hero. A hero of flesh and bone … in the form of Thoroughbred racehorse Tiz the Law. The bay, under the command of Puerto Rican jockey Manuel Franco, prevailed determinedly in the first step of the Triple Crown – this year held as the 152nd edition of the Belmont Stakes in this emblematic city.

Tiz the Law – the race favorite from Sackatoga Stable, sent out by the experienced and well-fought trainer Barclay Tagg – became the first racehorse born in New York to win such an important test since 1882.

The fact is so transcendent, in the midst of the undeniable consequences that the coronavirus has left in the world, that the New York governor himself, Andrew Cuomo, could not contain the emotion and hope in his message:

“Congrats to New York's own Tiz the Law and Jockey Manuel Franco on winning the Belmont Stakes – the first New York-bred horse to win Belmont since 1882!” he expressed with pride.

"Tiz the Law ran for all of us and won, embodying what it means to be New York Tough. It was a different Belmont this year but thanks to all for making this iconic racing event happen," added the enthusiastic Cuomo.

This declaration revealed that a new hero had been born named Tiz the Law, the horse that broke the curse and wrote his name among the exalted in the history of horse racing in the United States.

The race developed in fractions of 23.11 for the quarter; 46.16 for the half; 1:09.94; 1:34.46; and stopping the clock at 1:46.53 for 1 1/8 miles. This makes the son of Constitution, out of Tizfiz by Tiznow, the unmistakable protagonist of the fastest time for the distance this year on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

Although, the excellent time is still more than a second over the track record flaunted by the great Secretariat (1:45.40) set on Sept. 15, 1973, in the Marlboro Cup Handicap.

Envisioning a new Triple Crown winner

According to the impressions of the distinguished Puerto Rican rider, Manuel Franco – whose experience and effectiveness has been honed over seven years riding at principle U.S. tracks – the horse finished the test well and can perform better in the remining two steps to emulate the historical exploits of former Triple Crown winners. This list includes Sir Barton, 1919; Gallant Fox, 1930; Omaha, 1935;  War Admiral, 1937; Whirlaway, 1941; Count Fleet, 1943; Assault, 1946; Citation, 1948; Secretariat, 1973; Seattle Slew, 1977; Affirmed, 1978; American Pharoah, 2015; and finally Justify in 2018.

Franco explained that he felt like the winner by the half-mile pole.

“I had a lot of horse, I just waiting for the right moment to make my final move.”

And that was how the strategy materialized. When he asked his mount to make his run, the jockey received a positive response. The maroon and silver diamond silks and No. 8 saddle towel put themselves far ahead of the other nine rivals.

“The first thing I felt when I crossed the finish was that I achieved one of my dreams, to win a Triple Crown race. Now it’s a dream made reality,” he said serenely, although still floating from the novel experience.

Manuel Franco stated with firm belief that God willing, there could be a Triple Crown this year.

“I have a lot of confidence in the horse and also know that I’m in good hands with the trainer Barclay Tagg. He has the experience and has been through this before,” he asserted with confidence and maturity.

Perhaps this will be the opportunity for the 82-year-old trainer to vindicate history, despite losing with Funny Cide in 2003 after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Only the one step remained …

God could grant a deserved prize for the tenacity, experience, and dedication to a life in horse racing. The glorious Triple Crown would be a golden cherry to top the extensive and distinguished Thoroughbred training career of Mr. Tagg.

To the Puerto Rican jockey, the congratulatory words emitted by governor Cuomo deeply resonated.

“We all know that in New York we are passing through difficult moments, and that it’s these events that clear the minds of the fans,” Franco said. “Even moreso when a New York-bred comes up with a victory in this class of racing. It’s something big that has not happened for 138 years,” he pointed out.

With this feat, staged at a Belmont Park – unusually silent, without tellers taking bets and without the famous Belmont Freeze that refreshes the public on days without a pandemic – Tiz the Law registered his fifth win in six starts, plus a decent third place. His earnings, now totaling $1,480,300, are worth more than 10 times his purchase price of $110,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale of New York-Bred yearlings.

A blessing for owner Jack Knowlton, and for New York, which finally has its hero.
