all in Horse Country

Reflecting on the Thoroughbred Makeover experience has definitely taken a lot of time and lot of processing. So much training, anticipation, time and money were spent over the course of the last eight months to get myself and this big, goofy horse to this one competition. At various points over the last several months, we went from thinking we could possibly make the finale to maybe thinking we wouldn’t be able to make the trip at all, then back to being hopeful for a successful competition.

The recoilless rifle was six feet long and weighed over a hundred pounds. It often required three or four Marines to carry it across the battlefields during the Korean War. Lugging it was dangerous, but it was necessary, because that rifle, which the soldiers nicknamed “reckless,” could fire a 75mm shell thousands of yards with surgical-like precision. It was one of the U.S. Marine Corps’ finest munitions. But the commander of the Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Eric Pedersen, knew there had to be a better way to use it on the battlefield in Korea.

After losing his cherished Thoroughbred mare, Aaron Clark began searching for a new horse. While browsing CANTER Michigan’s available horses, he discovered Grander Plan. Originally adopted for Aaron, it wasn’t long before his young daughter, Riley, fell in love with the gelding, and Grander Plan soon became her show horse.

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) Championships concluded Sunday, Oct. 27, with participation from 206 Thoroughbreds and 210 riders. The show was held at Stable View in Aiken, S.C., from Oct. 24-27.

Cash prizes of $2,000 per division were awarded to the 42 divisions offered, which included hunters, jumpers, English pleasure, dressage, combined test, Western pleasure, ranch riding, competitive trail, and in-hand competition.

On the evening of Oct. 6, after viewing and acknowledging pictures of Real Grace in a paddock on a farm in Lexington, his racing trainer and my good friend, Shelley Brown, put down her phone for what ended up being the last time. Pictures and video sent the following day, heralding Grayson’s arrival at Kentucky Horse Park and his first adventures of that pivotal week, will forever remain unread.
