The holiday season is at hand, a new year is around the corner and in some parts of the country turf racing has gone on hiatus until the days when talk about the Kentucky Derby reaches a fever pitch.

What that means is that turf runners in an area such as New York will travel south to Florida to enjoy the greener grounds at Gulfstream Park or head to a farm for a few months of rest while awaiting the return of spring.

The Pick 6 can be the most lucrative wager in horse racing.

It can also be the most expensive.

That paradox succinctly explains why the wager can be tilted in favor of handicappers with larger bankrolls. Given how quickly combinations can add up, the $2 bettor cannot keep pace with players who can wager $300 or $500 without blinking an eye.

Syndicates can help small players compete, but there are times when even the $2 player can take a stab at a Pick 6.

What matters here is finding the right spot.

The superfecta might seem like an imposing wager. If you struggle to hit an exacta - where you need to predict just the first two finishers - it’s understandable to view picking the first four finishers in order as an impossible dream.

Yet the feared superfecta can actually have a strategic role in your wagering, largely because of its minimal cost. With a 10-cent minimum wager at many tracks, you can drop a lot of dimes in building a ticket that cover a lot of bases for a relatively small amount of dollars.

In playing a sequence or horizontal exotic wager, the size of your bankroll can definitely impact your betting strategy.

As much as you might want to hit the “All” button and wheel the field in a large and confusing race, adding 12 horses to your ticket can easily push the cost of it out of your price range.

So what should you do?

Sometimes sorting between apples and oranges can help you to reap some of the advantages of the more imposing “All’ button and open the door for a huge payout.

In any discussion about the impact late money has on handicapping a race there should be a disclaimer.

While some people focus on the shifts in win odds during the final minutes of wagering, there’s also a collection of handicappers who believe early money — or the odds during the initial minutes of wagering — are more telling factors.

Rather than engage in that decades-old debate, for the purposes of today’s lesson we’ll focus on late money and some important points to keep in mind while watching the toteboard as post-time approaches.
