In a monumental schedule change, Oaklawn Park’s 118th season opens Friday, adding December race dates to the calendar for the first time in the track’s history. The 66-day meet will be conducted largely on a Friday-Sunday basis and will conclude Sunday, May 8. 

A race sponsorship campaign initially brought attention to the Claiborne Farm stallion Runhappy, but at Churchill Downs Nov. 27, the sire received notice of another kind.

Churchill Downs unveiled Nov. 22 the 2022 “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby,” by Kentucky artist Aimee Griffith. This marks the sixth year in a row that Churchill Downs tapped a Kentucky artist for the honor.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar last Saturday, besides providing countless memorable moments and fantastic races, went a long way toward deciding the winners of the Eclipse Awards. First held in 1971, the Eclipse Awards are racing’s year-end awards, given out to the champions of each major division.

The 38th Breeders’ Cup World Championships is in the books and, although the racing calendar through the rest of 2021 will be less stocked with big-time races than the preceding 10 months, it’s only a brief respite before action picks back up and the focus of owners, trainers, jockeys, horseplayers, fans, and everyone else shifts to the horse racing’s marquee event on the first Saturday in May.
