all in Breeders' Cup

The winner of the Nov. 3 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by TAA at Santa Anita Park most likely will become the favorite, or at least one of the favorites, for next year’s Kentucky Derby. But through the years, such winners have performed more like longshots to win the run for the roses.

Bob Ehalt and Tom Pedulla became fast friends when they met on their first day at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1970. Bob soon introduced Tom to the joys of Thoroughbred racing.

They have endured some rough moments at the track, with Tom taking exception when Bob repeatedly smacks him on the back with a program as one of their horses launches an all-out drive. Much to Tom’s chagrin and the amusement of onlookers, Bob has been known to call for security as he proceeds to cash a $27 triple.

Zenyatta had done everything asked of her through 13 career starts. Launching one breathtaking rally after another, she had run down every filly or mare sent against her.

With Breeders’ Cup celebrating the 40th edition of its World Championships this year, BloodHorse thought it would be a good time to consider the event’s 40 greatest horses to date.

As the 40th edition of the Nov. 3-4 World Championships at Santa Anita Park approaches, Hayley Amoss, senior manager of social media and content at Breeders’ Cup, is in the midst of her busiest time of the year.
