all in Breeders' Cup

Tom Pedulla offers five takeaways from a major weekend of racing that will significantly impact the Nov. 1-2 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar. He looks at five Grade 1 races Saturday that offered automatic, fees-paid berths in corresponding Breeders’ Cup races.

Juddmonte’s homebred champion mare Idiomatic returned to her winning ways at Keeneland Oct.

Bluestocking fulfilled the huge confidence of jockey Rossa Ryan as well as the hopes and dreams of trainer Ralph Beckett to put the emerald and pink silks of Juddmonte back into the hallowed Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner’s circle for a record seventh time Oct. 6 at Longchamp Racecourse outside Paris, France.

Maxfield won the 2019 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in his second start for owner-breeder Godolphin and trainer Brendan Walsh and headed west as one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

But he was scratched from the race and underwent surgery for an ankle chip a couple of weeks later, costing himself a championship opportunity.

Perhaps the fifth time will be the charm for trainer Chad Brown.
