Every once in a while I like to veer off the beaten path in this blog, and when I do so it’s usually for one of two reasons: it’s a Mid-Atlantic-based racehorse (hey, I’m a Delaware Park guy) or it’s a Thoroughbred who has flashed eye-catching finishing speed. In Ultimate Love’s case, it’s the best of both worlds.

Mike Campbell’s gut told him he would eventually follow the lead of his grandfather and father by becoming a trainer. The former jockey never anticipated the awful turn that would lead him to that second career and now a second trip to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

There is no event in Thoroughbred racing quite like the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

While other horse racing events feature a compelling full day of racing, they are almost always built upon one major race. The Breeders’ Cup, on the other hand, is a two-day event with 14 championship races across multiple divisions that helps crown myriad champions and highlight the best of the best in the sport.

Ken McPeek, trainer and part-owner of Thorpedo Anna, was interviewed in a video clip Oct. 9 that seemed to suggest the 2024 Horse of the Year could be retired before getting a chance to secure a repeat victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. We’ll see.
