all in Breeders' Cup

The fields for the 14 races that comprise the Breeders’ Cup World Championships really begin to come into focus in summer and fall. This regular feature will offer a snapshot profile of one of the previous weekend’s standout stars, usually a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series winner, and exploring their chances to win a targeted race Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar.

Tom Pedulla offers takeaways from the $500,000 Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun and the $350,000, Grade 1 Alfred G.

Fabled California-bred gelding The Chosen Vron dominated the $400,000 Bing Crosby Stakes July 27, posting an easy victory as he won the key Southern California sprint at Del Mar for the second year in a row.

Del Mar, the host track for this year’s Breeders Cup World Championships, was built in 1937 and has a colorful and star-studded history. It was an extremely popular hangout for celebrities in its heyday and continues to be one of the country’s most exciting and glamourous racetracks to this day.

But late at night, after all of the fans have gone home, the revelry doesn’t stop. Some say that’s just when the party gets started at Del Mar … because that’s when the ghosts come out to play.

Saturday’s Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar carries some important Breeders’ Cup implications. For starters, the winner gets a guaranteed, free spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Beyond that, what happens in Saturday’s Grade 1 stakes will be doubly important since the BC Sprint will be contested on Nov.
