Sovereignty closed from last of 10 to finish fourth in his career debut sprinting six furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 24, 2024. The Godolphin homebred Into Mischief colt made his second start in a one-turn mile race Sept. 27 at Belmont at the Big A and improved to check in a close second, losing by a neck.

Trainer Bill Mott then stretched Sovereignty out to two turns in the 1 1/16-mile Street Sense Stakes Oct. 27 at Churchill Downs. Sent off as the post-time favorite, the bay colt trailed the field through six furlongs before swinging into contention with a six-wide move coming out of the far turn. He powered clear in early stretch under jockey Junior Alvarado to earn his first career win by five lengths in a Grade 3 stakes, earning 10 qualifying points for the 2025 Kentucky Derby Woodford Reserve in the process.

Sovereignty had four months off following the Street Sense Stakes triumph and made his return to the racetrack in his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 $400,000 Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park on March 1, 2025. Sovereignty used every bit of that 1 1/16-mile trip when he made a last-to-first rally under Junior Alvarado to earn the impressive victory, catching the leading River Thames at the wire by a neck. The Fountain of Youth Stakes was another points race on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby, and with his victory, Sovereignty earned 50 more points for a total of 60.

Sovereignty moved onward to Gulfstream Park's ultimate Kentucky Derby prep race for his next start in the Grade 1 $1 million Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa on March 29 but did not enjoy the same level of success he had in the Fountain of Youth. Sent off as the 1.70-1 favorite in a 10-horse field from post 10 in the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby, Sovereignty closed from near the rear to get up for second but fell short of winner Tappan Street by 1 1/4 lengths. That finish earned the colt another 50 Derby qualifying points, but Sovereignty had already secured a spot in the field with his earlier stakes wins.

After the Florida Derby, Sovereignty shipped to Churchill Downs to train for the May 3 Kentucky Derby and impressed media and others assembled on the backside with his workouts over a track he’d already won a stakes race over at age 2. On race day, he was sent off as the 7-1 third betting choice facing 18 opponents on a track rated as sloppy after continuous rain, and after missing the Florida Derby due to injury, regular jockey Junior Alvarado was back aboard.

Sovereignty broke from the 16^th post position in Derby 151 and settled in the rear division through the first turn and into the backstretch behind a solid early pace. Alvarado moved his mount up nearing the far turn and followed post-time favorite Journalism as both rallied into contention at the quarter pole. The pair swung wide in early stretch and dueled for the lead in the final furlong, and under strong urging, Sovereignty prevailed by 1 ½ lengths to give both Alvarado and Godolphin first Derby wins and Bill Mott his second.

Three days after the Derby win, Bill Mott told reporters that Sovereignty would skip the May 17 Preakness Stakes and target the June 7 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets. While that ended any hopes for a Triple Crown, fans were still treated to a momentous 157^th Belmont as both Derby runner-up Journalism and third-place finisher Baeza were entered, with Journalism coming in off of a dramatic win in the Preakness. The Belmont Stakes was held at Saratoga for the second year in a row while Belmont Park continued with reconstruction and once again shortened to a mile and a quarter.

As it turned out, the Belmont Stakes played out remarkably similar to the Kentucky Derby, as Sovereignty stalked the early pace set by Rodriguez and followed Journalism as that colt made his bid for the lead in early stretch. Under vigorous handling by Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty drew up to the outside of Journalism in mid-stretch and powered clear of that rival to win by a convincing three lengths.

Sovereignty returned to the racetrack for his first post-Triple Crown outing in the Grade 2 $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga on July 26. Sent off as the heavy 1-2 odds favorite atop a small but select five-horse field of 3-year-olds that included stakes winners Sandman, Hill Road, and Mo Plex, Sovereignty had no trouble taking care of business with a stalking one-length victory over runner-up Baeza, who in turn was 9+ lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

Next came the big one, the Grade 1 $1.25 million DraftKings Travers Stakes going 1 1/4 miles on Aug. 23 at Saratoga. Sovereignty was heavily favored in a five-horse field in the "Midsummer Derby" and as expected he dominated the race in the late stages to draw off to a 10-length victory in the signature race of the Saratoga summer racing season. Sovereignty became the first horse since Thunder Gulch in 1995 to sweep the Kentucky Derby - Belmont Stakes - Travers Stakes triple, and his victory in the Travers gave Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first career win in the prestigious race.

Unfortunately, Sovereignty was withdrawn from consideration for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar due to a fever. Near the end of December, however, Sovereignty’s connections thrilled racing fans when they announced that the colt would stay in training and target a 4-year-old campaign. He won the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male for 2025, receiving every vote cast in the category, and to conclude the Jan. 22, 2026, proceedings, Sovereignty was honored as Horse of the Year.

Sovereignty returned to the track after nearly eight months on the sidelines and made his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 2 $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap going 1 1/8 miles on April 18, 2026. The 2026 Oaklawn Handicap was a headline race that not only featured Sovereignty but also Journalism in his 4-year-old debut and the 7-year-old former Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio. Sovereignty went to the front in the Oaklawn Handicap and set a pressured pace. He fended off a challenge by Journalism but could not hold off White Abarrio's stalking move and settled for second by two lengths.

Sovereignty is out of the unraced Bernardini mare Crowned. His second dam is millionaire and Grade 1 winner Mushka.
