Bear River began his career as a 2-year-old in 2023 and accumulated four victories in his first 17 lifetime outings include two turf sprint wins and two off-the-turf wins at 5 1/2 furlongs until really making his breakthrough in the final start of his 3-year-old season with a victory in the $98,000 Richard R. Scherer Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds on Dec. 21, 2024.

On Aug. 4, 2025, Bear River took on nine rivals in the $250,000 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint Preview going 5 1/2 furlongs at Ellis Park and scored the win by a neck over a quality field in an effort that propelled him onto the national stage for the first time for his subsequent start. That next race came in the Grade 2 $2 million Mint Kentucky Turf Srprint going six furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Aug. 30. Racing as part of a 12-horse field in the Kentucky Turf Sprint, Bear River was considered at outsider on the tote board at odds of 19.15-1 but he proved up to the task when able to get out front and take the field wire-to-wire to score a half-length victory on the wire under jockey James Graham. The Kentucky Turf Sprint was a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series "Win and You're In" event, and with his victory, Bear River earned a fees-paid automatic berth into the Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
