Gigante

Gigante won his maiden race in his second career start as a 2-year-old in a one-mile dirt race at Colonial Downs on Aug. 10, 2022. He then won again right away in his next start, this time on the grass at Colonial Downs in the $165,000 Kitten's Joy Stakes with a 6 3/4-length victory going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Gigante later ended his 2022 season with a pair of off-the-board finishes in graded stakes races including one on the turf and one on the dirt.

Gigante took nearly six months off before kicking off his 3-year-old season on May 17, 2023 at Indiana Downs, where he entered directly into a tough spot in the $150,000 Caesars Handicap going one-mile on the turf. Gigante went wire-to-wire to score by a nose in the Caesars Handicap, and that win put him on a turf path for the subsequent races of the season.

Following a loss in the $225,000 American Derby at Ellis Park on July 1, Gigante was sent back to Colonial Downs in Virginia where he was already a stakes winner as a 2-year-old. Gigante responded with a win in the $500,000 Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes going one mile (formerly run at Arlington). In a total change of tactics from the gate-to-wire form used to win the Caesars Handicap earlier in the year, Gigante rallied from last-to-first in a six-horse field to get up to win by a neck in the Secretariat.

Gigante is trained by Steve Asmussen. He was bred in Virginia by the sire Not this Time out of the mare Summertime Green by Empire Maker.
