Thoroughbreds in North America all celebrate their birthdays on Jan. 1, so as soon as the New Year rolls around, so does “foaling season” – that magical time that lasts from the beginning of January through the late spring when racehorse babies are born.

In this weekly piece, we’ll bring you the best of new arrivals to the Thoroughbred world. So sit back, relax, and take in the Cute Foals of the Week for 2020! Want to see cute foals in person? Be sure to visit Horse Country!

Horse racing is a sensory sport. So much of its excitement is generated from the colors that fill your eyes, the pungent smell of horse, and perhaps above all, its distinct sounds. The rhythmic beating of hooves in the dirt during morning training, punctuated by steady snorts; shouts and cheers from you and your friends as the longshot you have 10 bucks on crosses the finish line first; birds in the trees on a green spring morning leading in the herd.

As the planet learns to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, most are doing what they can to survive. Others are using creativity and innovation to help serve those in need.

The medical community — on the front line caring for those infected with the virus — is perhaps the most affected. Beyond the physical and emotional demands of their jobs, access to equipment and supplies is an ongoing struggle as state and local authorities scramble to keep pace.

There’s no missing Darwin Vizcaya. Whether it’s his giant ear-to-ear grin — which he’s seemingly always flashing at the track — or his physically imposing size (he’s 6 feet 4 inches tall), it’s hard not to notice the New York-based race caller and analyst originally from Aragua, Venezuela.

Aside from his physical features, Vizcaya has also caught the attention among many in the racing world for his work ethic and smooth presence on the TV screen covering racing in Spanish over the past few years.
