The DraftKings Travers Stakes is coming to Saratoga Race Course this Saturday, and if you’re planning to attend New York’s biggest day of summer racing, we have ten things you need to know before you go.

1. The Travers is also known as the “Mid-Summer Derby”

One of the biggest weeks on the annual calendar for horse racing in North America is upon us, as the main focus of fans and gamblers draws a bead on Saratoga Race Course for a spectacular Aug. 23 Saturday card anchored by the 156th DraftKings Travers Stakes.

The upcoming weekend in North American horse racing features the prestigious first leg of Canada’s Triple Crown, the 166th running of the King’s Plate at Woodbine. The 1 ¼-mile race for 3-year-olds bred in Canada anchors a spectacular day of racing Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Toronto, Ontario, track including five other stakes races.

After a very busy week in horse racing covering racing, conferences, ceremonies, and sales, this week the spotlight focuses on Saratoga Race Course (again) and also Colonial Downs for some important contests including one Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifier.

In sharing their different approaches of bringing new people to the sport, a pair of horse racing’s best-known fans — Griffin Johnson and Steve Kornacki — offer ideas on how everyone can do their part in introducing people to racing.
