When I first moved to New York back in 1999, I started dating a beautiful girl from Staten Island, the daughter of two wealthy lawyers, a brilliant scholar with a bright future in law ahead of herself.

She was funny, whip-smart, good looking and rich. I felt like I had hit a home run. But one day while we were walking down 7th Avenue past the flagship OTB (Off-Track-Betting) parlor, where the Winner’s Circle Restaurant was, we saw a man exiting the place with a little boy, maybe 6 or 7 years old, holding his hand.

The Breeders’ Cup is right around the corner and this year’s “World Championships of Horse Racing” will be held at Del Mar in beautiful Southern California. While there are still limited tickets available, attendance will be capped at a shade under 38,000. That’s capacity is far lower than the limit set by most other recent Breeders’ Cup host tracks in recent years.

The action was nonstop on Travers Stakes day at Saratoga. There were seven graded stakes races highlighted by the “Mid-Summer Derby”, the $1.25 million Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, itself. Here’s a look back at some of our favorite tweets from Saturday.

The Road to the Breeders’ Cup continues this Saturday, Aug. 5, with the Grade 1, $1.2 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The 1 1/8-mile test is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov.

In the early morning hours, Belmont Park greeted the day with quiet majesty. The horses are tucked into their barns for their race day rituals. The stately Japanese White Pine towers over the paddock walking ring offering beauty, shade and comfort. The tree is believed to be almost 190 years old and is a stately remnant from the 650 acre estate of New York attorney William DeForest Manice.
