Hermitage Farm became an important Thoroughbred stud farm nearly 100 years ago, its name associated with a long list accomplished racehorses and high-priced yearlings. Today, it still has a prominent place in the horse industry, and has become successful in other areas as well.

When I first started working at Santa Anita Park, I discovered a whole new meaning to Christmas for Southern California horseplayers. Dec. 25 meant that the next day venerable Santa Anita was opening for its new racing season.

My 88-year-old dad has the most amazing picks every day when we watch horse racing. Time and time again, I watch his selections hit the board. When the Sporting Art Auction catalog arrived from Cross Gate Gallery, I sat him down with a stack of post it notes and asked him for his “paddock picks.” For over an hour, his palsied hands turned each page slowly as he leaned forward and studied the magnificent selection of paintings, etchings, watercolors and sculptures. Dad is not from the generation that would squander an entire post it note to mark a page in a book.

Shanghaied, Pop Pop and I had lots of fun on the road to the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover. From the time we claimed Shanghaied at Penn National, brought him home to Maine, rehabilitated, re-conditioned, and re-schooled him, Shanghaied has given 100%. My training partner Pop Pop gave more than 100%, taking weekly lessons, traveling to Maine from Pennsylvania and trusting me with the training process.
