The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today #LoveOfTheHorse, a social media promotion in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Eclipse Awards that encourages horse fans and enthusiasts to share photos of themselves that demonstrate their deep connection and love of the horse. Inspired by Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man,” this year’s awards show will depict the many stories that uniquely touched our hearts this past year.

The race is on, and the finish line is almost here. This year’s U.S. presidential race is hotly contested, and like any horse race it is rife with speculation and interesting language. What you may not realize is just how many terms used during this year’s election cycle originated in one of America’s oldest pastimes: horse racing.

Here you’ll find 11 terms that left the gate firmly entrenched in horse racing vernacular, but strayed from the course and are now often used during election season.

Samantha Smith, the director of marketing and communications for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance since February 2023, can never remember a time when horses were not a part of her life. The native of Syracuse, N.Y., attended a horse camp as a young child, received her first riding horse when she was in middle school, and competed in hunter/jumper classes. She also received some early exposure to racing through her father who owns Standardbreds.
