all in Aftercare

After months of preparation, the time had finally arrived for the final week of training with the two horses I’ve been working tirelessly with. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions as I’ve trained them both, but I was ready to take them to the Thoroughbred Makeover!

I’ve enjoyed reflecting and writing on ABR about training Quick Chaos. I’ve promised myself I’ll continue to write about our journey on the goodhorse.org blog. In this final post, the first thing I’d like to do is thank the Retired Racehorse Project. The staff and volunteers work extremely hard to make this a first-class event and they succeeded. It was a positive experience for Scout, which was my goal. In fact, Scout’s next planned outing will be his first recognized show at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. I think it will seem mundane to him compared to the Thoroughbred Makeover.

After losing his cherished Thoroughbred mare, Aaron Clark began searching for a new horse. While browsing CANTER Michigan’s available horses, he discovered Grander Plan. Originally adopted for Aaron, it wasn’t long before his young daughter, Riley, fell in love with the gelding, and Grander Plan soon became her show horse.

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) Championships concluded Sunday, Oct. 27, with participation from 206 Thoroughbreds and 210 riders. The show was held at Stable View in Aiken, S.C., from Oct. 24-27.

Cash prizes of $2,000 per division were awarded to the 42 divisions offered, which included hunters, jumpers, English pleasure, dressage, combined test, Western pleasure, ranch riding, competitive trail, and in-hand competition.

On the evening of Oct. 6, after viewing and acknowledging pictures of Real Grace in a paddock on a farm in Lexington, his racing trainer and my good friend, Shelley Brown, put down her phone for what ended up being the last time. Pictures and video sent the following day, heralding Grayson’s arrival at Kentucky Horse Park and his first adventures of that pivotal week, will forever remain unread.
