The retraining process can be extremely tough with any new horse. It can leave you learning new valuable lessons while also leaving you with many questions that you may not be able to answer on your own.

With Goldie, retraining has been unique. I have ridden many horses in my life but never a horse as young as Goldie at just 5 years old, and who can naturally do the equivalent of a human squat in his hind end and fly backwards quicker than he is willing to go forward.

This year, America’s Best Racing and the Retired Racehorse Project will be sharing diaries from several trainers preparing for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover competition, scheduled for Oct. 11-14 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Meet adult amateur rider Julianne Pangal and her RRP hopeful, Funnee, as they gear up for their maiden voyage to the Thoroughbred Makeover.

The retraining process with Dom has definitely been a learning experience! From the moment he stepped off the trailer, I swear I learn something new every day! One of the biggest lessons I have learned has been about lameness and hoof care.

I have owned horses my entire life, but our horses were relatively low maintenance when it came to their feet. All they needed were regular trims and getting their feet picked.

When Bronn first came to me, over a year ago at this point, he was truly the epitome of what a racehorse should be. Sleek, strong, powerful, sound… When he walked off that trailer, I remember thinking this was a dream come true. In fact, I felt like Velvet watching The Pi walk towards her seemingly in a dream. How is this, how is HE, real!?

My name is Morgan Hayden and I am an amateur from Townsend, Del. This will be my fourth time competing in the Thoroughbred Makeover. I am an all-around English rider with a love for eventing. I am extremely excited about competing this year in the Thoroughbred Makeover, especially since for the first time I will be competing with as an individual with my horse Goldie’s Boy.
