all in Aftercare

Chelsea Whalen previously had some experience training and retraining horses but had never worked with an off-the-track Thoroughbred. She embraced the challenge of transitioning a former racehorse into a Hunter Jumper. Chelsea found her perfect match at New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program. Many of the horses that go to New Vocations are put into a retraining program for a new discipline when they arrive.

What qualities make a great racehorse? Speed? Stamina? Power? Thoroughbred breeders try to breed for the best traits to make the best racehorses in the industry, and those decisions, if successful, can help horses go on to such incredible second careers.

Ruth Cheyenne Gilman had been a volunteer at Circle A Home for Horses, and she also had adopted a horse previously from the organization. In the fall of 2022, Asuka, a slender and beautiful Thoroughbred mare, arrived at Circle A Home for Horses in Virginia Beach, Va.

Initially, Asuka appeared moody and seemed to be “thoroughly scared of people,” wrote Ruth about her first impression of the bay mare. However, after having time to adjust to her new environment and get to know her new caretakers, Asuka slowly came around.

Well, another month has come and gone. Tax season ended, the race meet started, Grayson ensured he rang out tax season short one shoe and then gained himself even MORE holidays by tossing one of his new shoes within four days of the reset that was meant to get us riding again.

Nothing is ever simple, predictable, or easy with horses!

After all that ruckus, I finally got him started back three days ago. Which leaves me with not much to write about, where he is concerned. (But he’s cute!)

West Point Thoroughbreds will be represented by not one, but two graded stakes winners at the 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover: Cavalry Charge and Decorated Invader! Their Thoroughbred Makeover trainers, Erin Knehr and Mary Termer, will be telling the stories of these two winners in a joint blog entry each month.
