Kimberly Quinn rode with Jennifer Blades at Willowbrooke Farm. Kimberly was in search of her next horse when Friend of Dubai joined the CANTER Michigan herd at the farm. Friend of Dubai, a 2016 dark bay Thoroughbred gelding, had raced 21 times and earned $30,523 over his three-year career. Friend of Dubai had only two under-saddle rides off the track, so when Kimberly inquired about him Jennifer said that she was "uncertain about his potential.”

Joy Nakrin took a huge leap of faith when she adopted a horse, sight unseen, from Blue Bloods Thoroughbred Adoption and Placement, located in Blanch, N.C. Blue Bloods is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-run organization whose mission is to help transition former racehorses from the track to their new homes. One of the organization’s unique qualities is its collaboration with the Equestrian Studies program at Averett University to help market the horses.

Well, here we are. Two weeks away from Thoroughbred Makeover, the big event that so many of us have been working tirelessly toward for the last 6-8 months. This update is not the one I want to be writing, and comes to you a week after I spent the day at King Animal Hospital, waiting for Mr Nobility to receive laser scarification on his soft palate. How did we get here?

When we last left off everything was going great, but these are horses and not for the faint of heart. Scout suffered a kick to his front leg. Fortunately, it was up high and involved only bone and not tendons or ligaments. This meant some time off from training and digital X-rays to ensure it wasn’t something serious like a sequestrum (from Merriam-Webster: fragment of dead bone detached from adjoining sound bone). We lost about three weeks altogether.

Well, it’s sure been a month! On the backstretch, we were leading up to our biggest day of racing, Canadian Derby day.

My own little racehorse broke his maiden! In what was hands down the slowest seven-furlong time in the history of horse racing … but a win is a win and I’m proud of my little pup.
