Belmont at the Big A Spring-Summer Betting Preview: Jockeys and Trainers to Follow
The most anticipated week in the horse racing calendar is here, and coverage of the sport on TV, radio, and via livestream programs will be at an annual peak in the days leading up to May 3 when the 151st Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve will be held at Churchill Downs.
The field has been drawn for the first jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, and now the focus over the next several days shifts to coverage of entrants’ final training at Churchill and to handicapping previews.
As for the actual $5 million event, NBC Sports holds exclusive broadcast rights to the Kentucky Derby and will showcase the race to millions of viewers worldwide as the finale of 12 ½ hours of coverage spread across two days. The final five hours May 3 will be broadcast nationwide on NBC and streamed on Peacock, with post time for the Kentucky Derby set for 6:47 p.m. ET. NBC Sports will also cover undercard races during this five-hour bloc from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and before that the network will provide coverage from noon to 2:30 on USA Network and streaming on Peacock as well.
On May 2, NBC Sports offers five hours of coverage from Churchill on USA Network and streaming on Peacock from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET, culminating in the 151st Longines Kentucky Oaks for 3-year-old fillies, which has a scheduled post time of 5:51 p.m. ET. Overall, 17 races from Churchill Downs will be shown live on either NBC or USA Network over the two days. NBC’s coverage, anchored by Mike Tirico with analysis from Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey, will feature the usual abundance of special camera footage (two live drones will be used) handicapping and analysis from the likes of Eddie Olczyk, Matt Bernier, and Steve Kornacki, lifestyle coverage from Dylan Dreyer, and high-quality features , including an interview with Bob Baffert and profiles of Michael McCarthy and D. Wayne Lukas.
All races at Churchill save the Kentucky Derby will also be broadcast on FanDuel TV, which provides comprehensive coverage of Churchill Downs’ spring meet that began April 26. FanDuel TV will broadcast each race from the three cards leading up to Oaks Day – Tuesday, April 29 (502’s Day), Wednesday, April 30 (Champions Day), and Thursday, May 1 (Thurby) and then broadcast undercard races on Oaks and Derby Days. Other tracks covered in FanDuel TV’s daily package this week include Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, Laurel Park, Horseshoe Indianapolis, and Woodbine.
“Breakfast at the Kentucky Derby,” FanDuel TV’s coverage of workouts live on site at Churchill Downs, continues each day until Thursday, airing from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. ET. The show features live training footage as well as interviews, analysis and insights from FanDuel TV’s team of handicappers. And the network will also present a “Kentucky Derby Handicappers’ Preview” show on Tuesday, April 29, at noon ET featuring in-depth analysis of what’s always a fascinating betting race. All of FanDuel TV’s Kentucky Derby content is available on demand via the network’s YouTube racing channel.
For more training coverage, Twinspires.com continues its ongoing Kentucky Derby Morning Works Show, ending Thursday. The livestream airs from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. ET and highlights the 15-minute exclusive training window at Churchill for Derby and Oaks contenders from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
Live racing from Aqueduct and Oaklawn Park (which ends its meet on Saturday) will be broadcast on “America’s Day at the Races” during a four-day run from Thursday to Sunday, May 4. The NYRA-produced show airs on FS2 this week and will also present a Kentucky Derby Preview Show Thursday evening after its regular program.
Horse racing from tracks around the world is available to subscribers on Racetrack Television Network (RTN), which can be livestreamed on all devices (computer, tablet and smartphone) and on TV via DISH Network, Amazon Fire and Roku.
America’s Best Racing has two upcoming livestream shows that will focus on the Kentucky Derby. First, we present “Derby Preview LIVE!” hosted by Anita Marks with special guests that has a tentative start time of 7 p.m. ET Thursday. “Derby Preview LIVE!” is presented by NYRA Bets and will be streamed on ABR’s Facebook, X, and YouTube channels.
NYRA Bets also begins sponsorship this week of ABR’s new “The Saturday Show – Live Betting with the Boys,” a fast-paced and exciting betting show hosted by Ryan Anderson and Jackson Muniz. Our Derby Day episode has a start time of 3 p.m. ET and also will be streamed on ABR’s Facebook, X, and YouTube channels.
