2024 Kentucky Oaks Cheat Sheet: Get to Know the Horses
Where to Watch/Listen: Horse Racing Coverage for Aug. 26-30
Events / TravelThe horse racing world like all other areas of society continues to make changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis. Most racetracks currently operating are doing so without spectators, and have instituted strict safety screening protocols for essential employees who are already on the grounds to provide daily care for horses. Charities are ramping up services to help track workers during these hard times, including the Race Track Chaplaincy, New York Division, while many other organizations including the Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation are redirecting resources to support medical efforts to combat the spread of the virus and support backstretch workers. (All proceeds from the Old Smoke T-shirt on sale below will go to the TJC Safety Net Foundation.)
Two Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” races are on tap for Aug. 29: the Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga, which offers a free entry to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf; and the Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar, an automatic qualifer for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The Sword Dancer will be shown on NYRA's “Saratoga Live” telecast on FS2. “Saratoga Live” will be shown on either FS1 and FS2 from Wednesday to Sunday and also air on MSG+ and on regional Fox outlets Prime Ticket and Fox Sports San Diego – check NYRA’s website for those dates and times.
Saturday's Pat O'Brien Stakes will be televised live on TVG as part of their comprehensive coverage of racing at Del Mar. Post time is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
In advance of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on Sept. 5, a special one-hour documentary celebrating 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah premieres this Sunday, Aug. 30 at noon ET on NBC. The NBC Sports Films’ documentary “Born to Run” presented by MassMutual reminisces about the superstar's sweep of the Triple Crown and his win in the Breeders' Cup Classic, and continues the story of American Pharoah after he retired to stud at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky.
For livestreaming coverage, ABR's new show broadcast in Spanish and English, "La Trifecta," continues on Fridays. The show features analysis from Claudia Spadaro, Darwin Vizcaya and Annise Montplaisir. It’s available on ABR’s Facebook Live, Twitter, and YouTube pages and on Annise's Twitter account.
On Saturday, ABR presents a special edition of "Woodbine Live" focusing on Standardbred racing at Mohawk Park, part of the Woodbine complex. The show focuses on the Pepsi North American Cup and will be hosted by Ashley Mailloux and Robert Reid Jr. It will be streamed on ABR’s Twitter and YouTube pages.
A don’t-miss highlight of this weekend’s radio coverage is "The Winner’s Circle," America’s Best Racing’s podcast presented by NYRA Bets. The show, hosted by Bram Weinstein, airs at 10 a.m. ET on Saturdays through Nov. 7 on Sports Map Radio. Subscribe to "The Winner's Circle" on Apple Podcasts to listen to archived episodes.
The Aug. 29 "Winner's Circle" guests are jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., rider of leading Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve contender Art Collector, and Billy Koch from Little Red Feather Racing, co-owner of Del Mar Handicap Presented by Japan Racing Association winner Red King.
