Wit

A $575,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2020, Wit had high expectations before his first race. He was the 0.45-1 favorite in a maiden special weight race at Belmont Park on June 5, 2021. He lived up to that billing on debut, stalking the leaders and drawing away to a 6 1/2-length win. 

On the strength of that win, Wit was once again the favorite in his stakes debut, the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga on July 17. Just like in his first start, he rated off the leaders and powered away late, scoring by eight lengths while covering six furlongs in 1:11.20.

Boasting a perfect two-for-two record, Wit was sent off as the odds-on favorite in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes on Saratoga's closing Sept. 6 card. He started slow, however, and although he rallied to reach contention at the top of the stretch, he was no match for runaway winner Gunite, settling for a clear second. WIt closed out his 2-year-old season with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes Oct. 2 at Belmont Park.

Wit returned from a six-month layoff April 9 at Aqueduct in the $200,000 Bay Shore Stakes. He closed from well off the pace to nip highly respected by a nose in the final strides of the Grade 3 race.

Owned by Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable, and Gainesway Stable, Wit is out of the unraced Medaglia d'Oro mare Numero d'Oro and is a half brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father] to Grade 3 winner Barkley.
