The Great One made his career debut in the Speakeasy Stakes, a turf sprint Sept. 25, 2020, at Del Mar, and rallied to finish sixth. He subsequently finished fourth in a pair of maiden races, a one-mile race on the dirt Nov. 1 and a one-mile turf race Nov. 29, both at Del Mar.

Trainer Doug O’Neill moved him back to the main track for the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity, and utilized the same front-running tactics he’d used in his previous race when he was beaten by only two lengths. The Great One set a strong pace in the Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 19 and maintained a lead deep into the stretch before he was caught just before the finish line by Spielberg.
The Great One is named after NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky, whose nickname was "The Great One." His sire is champion Nyquist, another racehorse named after a star hockey player. Multiple stakes- winner Little Miss Protocol, by El Corredor, is the dam (mother) of The Great One.
