Special Forces began his racing career in Kentucky and Louisiana but did not find success until shipped to Woodbine, where he broke his maiden in his seventh career start during August 2018. The Candy Ride gelding continued to race mainly at Woodbine and won three consecutive allowance races there during late 2018 and early 2019.

Trainer Kevin Attard then moved Special Forces up to stakes company, and his success continued. The gelding ran second three times and third once in four consecutive stakes – three at Woodbine and one at Presque Isle Downs. On Nov. 3, 2019, he posted his first career stakes victory in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine, defeating Mr. Ritz by three quarters of a length. Special Forces did not race again in 2019 and then missed all of 2020 due to a variety of reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
He made his first start in a year and nine months in an allowance-optional claiming race at Woodbine before a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup. He regained his best form in the Grade 3 Durham Cup when he outfinished U.S. classic winner Sir Winston to prevail by a half-length Oct. 10 at Woodbine.
