Shivaree needed five starts to earn his first career win and then came back a week later on Nov. 30, 2019, and won the Buffalo Man Stakes by a neck at Gulfstream Park. He won the Limehouse Stakes at Gulfstream Park by 3 ¼ lengths in his 3-year-old bow before running second in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track. The Awesome of Course colt neck finished second by a neck in the Hutcheson Stakes Feb. 29 at Gulfstream and four weeks later set the pace and held on gamely for second in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby to earn 40 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

Shivaree made his next start in a tough allowance race on June 10 at Gulfstream Park against Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes winner and Florida Derby third-place finisher Ete Indien and Sam F. Davis Stakes winner and Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Sole Volante. He dueled with Ete Indien through the turn of the one-mile, one turn race and competed gamely in the stretch to defeat that foe, but was passed late by Sole Volante and Jesus' Team and settled for third.
