Scythian, a Tiz the Law filly owned and bred by Lawrence Goichman, finished second in her Aug. 4, 2024, debut on dirt but improved when switched to turf by trainer Bill Mott, taking a 1 1/16-mile maiden race Aug. 30 at Saratoga. She won that race by a head with a late rally after settling two lengths off the pace through the first three quarters of a mile.

In her next start, Scythian vied for an automatic berth in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies turf by starting in the Oct. 6 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont at the Big A. Sent off at 11.10-1 odds, the filly employed similar stalking tactics in the 1 1/16-mile Miss Grillo and spurted clear along the inside in early stretch. She was not challenged late in an impressive 2 ½-length victory over favored Virgin Colada.
New York-bred Scythian is out of the stakes-winning Empire Maker Dean Henry and is from the family of multiple graded stakes winner Read the Footnotes.
