After an unplaced finish sprinting in his career debut Oct. 15, 2022, at Gulfstream Park, Prairie Hawk closed out his 2-year-old season with a 2 ¾-length win going a mile and 40 yards at Tampa Bay Downs in December. He followed with a front-running, one-length win at Tampa in his 3-year-old bow in an allowance-optional claiming race at the same distance as his maiden win.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was encouraged enough by the back-to-back wins to give the Curlin colt a shot on the road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. However, a poor start hurt his chances in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes Feb. 11 at Tampa Bay Downs, where he was unplaced behind winner Litigate in his first start in a stakes race.
Given the early trouble, Joseph kept Prairie Hawk on the Triple Crown trail and he followed with an improved fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby on March 11.
Prairie Hawk is a half-brother (same dam, different sire) to 2018 Tampa Bay Derby winner Quip.
