Mackinnon

Unplaced in his career debut on the main track, Mackinnon improved when switching to the grass for his second start June 11, 2021, at Santa Anita Park, where he finished second in a five-furlong turf sprint.

Mackinnon broke through with a 1 ¾-length win in his third career start when stretching out to a mile July 31 at Del Mar. The American Pharoah colt followed with clear wins in the one-mile Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes and one-mile Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita Park to cement his credentials as a candidate for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

On Nov. 5 at Del Mar, Mackinnon closed from 12^th in a 13-horse field to finish third behind winner Modern Games and runner-up Tiz the Bomb.

Mackinnon made his 2022 debut in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 12. Sent off as the odds-on favorite, he made a strong move to the front in the stretch, but was outkicked by Blackadder and finished second. He earned four qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve for the performance. 

Co-owned by professional hockey player Erik Johnson, Mackinnon is named for his All-Star teammate Nathan MacKinnon on the Colorado Avalanche.
