Informed Patriot, a Hard Spun colt trained by Steve Asmussen for owners Kirk and Judy Robison, earned three qualifying points for the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve when he finished a fast-closing third in the Jan. 1 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

The colt had won one of three starts prior to his Smarty Jones attempt, taking a seven-furlong maiden race Sept. 22, 2023 at Churchill Downs. He earned his first three points for the 2024 Kentucky Derby by finisning third in the Street Sense Stakes Oct. 29 at Churchill, and doubled that number with his Smarty Jones run. In his next try for Derby points, the colt finished a distant and disappointing fifth in the Sunland Park Derby Feb. 19, picking up two more points.
Informed Patriot made his next start in the $1.5 million Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on March 30, where he finished fifth in a 10-horse field and earned another 10 Derby qualifying points for a total of 18.
Informed Patriot is out of the stakes-winning Grand Slam mare Yawkey Way, who is also the dam of Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run and stakes winner Tap It All.
