Hoist the Gold, a son of Mineshaft owned by Dream Team One Racing Stable and trained by Dallas Stewart, was elevated to from second to first in his third career start in September 2021 after the first-place finisher, future Grade 1 winner Cyberknife, was disqualified for interference. He then was unplaced in three consecutive starts including two stakes before winning a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race at Fair Grounds in February 2022.

A 13-race winless streak followed through summer 2023, although Hoist the Gold showed he belonged in graded stakes company by finishing third in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in December 2022, second by a neck the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes in April 2023, and then second behind top miler Cody’s Wish in the Churchill Downs Stakes Presented by Ford in May 2023.
Hoist the Gold returned to the winner’s circle with a sharp 1 ¾-length win in a July 1 allowance optional claiming race at Ellis Park. Stewart then sent the 4-year-old colt to California for two graded stakes tries against top West Coast sprinters, but Hoist the Gold finished off the board in both of them.
He then returned to his Kentucky base and broke through with a long-sought graded stakes win, taking the Grade 2 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 6 by three-quarters of a length under first-time rider John Velazquez. Hoist the Gold earned a “Win and You’re In” berth to the 2023 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint with the win. Hoist the Gold subsequently entered the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita and settled for a sixth-place finish.
Hoist the Gold was not finished in 2023. Following the Breeders' Cup, Hoist the Gold's connections decided to take another shot at a stretch out to one mile in the Grade 2 $500,000 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct on Dec. 2. Sent off at 8-1 odds on the tote board in a 12-horse field in the Cigar Mile, Hoist the Gold sent right to the front and won a battle for the lead under jockey John Velazquez on a muddy sealed racetrack that had favored front runners much of the day. They set blazing fast fractions all the way around the track and drew off to a comfortable 4 1/2-length win in a final time of 1:34.28.
Kentucky-bred Hoist the Gold is out of the winning Tapit mare Tacit Approval.
