Gerrymander

Gerrymander, an Into Mischief filly owned by Klaravich Stables and trained by Chad Brown, finished a distant second in her debut during June 2021 at Belmont Park but moved forward from that effort and scored an upset win in her second start late in the Saratoga meet.

The filly did not appear again until October in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes, and she ran well when second behind eventual champion filly Echo Zulu, finishing 7 ¼ lengths behind the winner but three lengths in front of the third-place horse. Gerrymander closed out her juvenile campaign with a half-length win in the listed Tempted Stakes at Belmont.

Chad Brown brought his charge back for a 3-year-old campaign in a tough renewal of the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes Presented by TwinSpires at Churchill Downs. She was jostled at the start of the seven-furlong race and finished a well-beaten sixth.

Returning against a short field in the Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes, held June 25 at 1 1/16 miles around one turn at Belmont Park, Gerrymander broke in front but relinquished it to odds-on favorite Juju’s Map and stalked the leader through the turn. Jockey Joel Rosario kept her in third while UAE Derby winner Shahama engaged Juju’s Map, and Gerrymander moved past them both in early stretch en route to an impressive three-length win.

Gerrymander was unplaced in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes in August at Saratoga Race Course as well as the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes in September at Parx Racing in her final two starts as a 3-year-old.

Gerrymander returned from a 6 ½-month layoff in the Distaff Handicap in April 2023 at Aqueduct and faded to fifth in the seven-horse field after setting the pace. She subsequently was a well-beaten third in the Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes at Belmont Park, after which she was given a class break and dropped back into allowance-optional claiming races in New York. She finished second at Belmont in June and third, then second, at Saratoga in July and August, respectively.

Gerrymander returned to stakes competition in the off-the-turf Noble Damsel Stakes Oct. 8 at the Belmont at the Big A meeting, where she capitalized on a race that was whittled down to two starters after seven scratches and won easily under Jose Ortiz.

Gerrymander is out of the winning and Grade 3-placed Hard Spun mare Ruby Lips and is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and millionaire long-distance horse Lone Rock.
