Following Sea broke his maiden in his second career start, a six-furlong maiden special weight at Oaklawn Park on April 10, 2021. He engaged in a contested speed duel with Happymac to his inside, but he drew away from that rival late and won by 5 3/4 lengths, covering six furlongs in 1:09.92.
In his next start, Following Sea raced in a first-level allowance at Belmont Park on Jun. 3. Once again, he ran away from the field after setting the pace. He coasted under the line 6 1/2 lengths in front, going 6 1/2 furlongs in a blazing 1:15.28.

Following Sea made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 17. It was also his first start around two turns. He showed speed and faded. He crossed the wire third, but was elevated to second after a disqualification.
For his next start, Following Sea cut back around one turn and finished third in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 28. He bounced back with an impressive win in the Grade 2 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont on Oct. 9, covering six furlongs in 1:09.25. That win guaranteed Following Sea a spot in the starting gate for the Grade 1 Qatar Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 6.
In the Sprint, Following Sea saved ground just off the pace, and held on to finish third.
Following Sea is a homebred for Spendthrift Farm LLC. He's sired by champion sprinter Runhappy, out of the stakes-winning mare Quick Flip.
