City of Troy, a Kentucky-bred son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, started his career with three straight victories on turf in Ireland and England, including a Group 2 stakes win and a Group 1 stakes win in summer and fall 2023. He returned for a 3-year-old campaign as the heavy favorite in the QIPCO English Two Thousand Guineas May 4, 2024, at Newmarket but tired to finish a well-beaten ninth.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien then stretched City of Troy out to longer distances, and the colt reached peak form over the summer of 2024, winning the Group 1 Betfred English Derby, the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes, and the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, all at 1 ¼ miles or longer.
Owners Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith of Coolmore then decided to ambitiously ship City of Troy to the U.S. for a first-ever start on dirt in the Nov. 2 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar.
City of Troy is out of the Group 1-winning Galileo mare Together Forever and is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Military Style and three stakes-placed horses.
