Chocolate Gelato, a daughter of Practical Joke owned by Repole Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, finished third in her debut July 14, 2022, at Saratoga as the odds-on favorite but improved nicely in her second start, also at Saratoga, to win a six-furlong race by 8 ½ lengths exactly one month later.

She then was rested seven weeks until making her stakes debut in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes Oct. 2 at the Belmont at the Big A meet. Chocolate Gelato sat off of the pace under Irad Ortiz Jr. and assumed the lead in the one-turn mile Frizette at the top of the stretch. She continued on well to the finish and outfinished stubborn early leader You’re My Girl by a length to win on a sloppy track. Chocolate Gelato earned a berth in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with the victory.
In her subsequent start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland on Nov. 4, Chocolate Gelato was sent off as the 9-2 second choice on the tote board in a field of 13 horses. She finished next to last in 12th.
Mike Repole bought Chocolate Gelato for $475,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida select 2-year-old auction. She is out of the winning Candy Ride mare Special Treat and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Imagining and Grade 2 winner Daydreaming.
