On March 13, 2021, Carlos L. won his first American stakes race, and did so in dramatic fashion. Sent off at 47.70-1, he set the early pace in the 1 1/2 mile Temperence Hill Stakes, then held off the challengers in the stretch to win in a major upset. In victory, he set a 1 1/2 mile track record at Oaklawn Park, going the distance in 2:29.87 for trainer McLean Robertson and jockey Alex Canchari.

Carlos L. was purchased for a mere $2,500 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale in 2017. He began his career in Panama, winning three stakes races in that country. After a win in the prestigious Grade 1 Clasico Presidente de la Republica Stakes in May 2019, he was sent to the United States.
