Cairo Consort

Cairo Consort broke her maiden in her third career outing as a 2-year-old in a 6 ½-furlong turf race at Woodbine on July 23, 2022. From there she was challenged against stakes competition and won her second consecutive 6 ½-furlong turf race at Woodbine when victorious in the $125,000 Catch a Glimpse Stakes on Aug. 20 by 2 ½ lengths. That win was promising enough to make her the favorite in the Grade 1 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes at one mile in her next start on Sept. 17. In the Natalma, Cairo Consort rallied from off the pace, overcame traffic at the quarter-pole, and closed willingly for second within a length of longshot winner Last Call.

The next start for Cairo Consort was in the Grade 1 $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland on Friday, Nov. 4. Cairo Consort outran 19-1 odds to run third after pressing the pace all the way in a race that ended up being otherwise ruled by closers, who finished first, second, and fourth.

Cairo Consort got off to a fast start in her 3-year-old season when she won her first start of 2023 in the $100,000 Ginger Brew Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 7. She ran the mile on firm turf in a time of 1:35.4 to win by a half a length.

Cairo Consort won again in her second outing of 2023 when she took the Grade 3 $175,000 Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 4. Sent off as the 2-1 favorite on the tote board in a field of nine, Cairo Consort made a last-to-first move to win by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:40.95 for the 1 1/16 miles on turf labeled good.

Trained by Nathan Squires, Cairo Consort is a Kentucky-bred gray or roan filly by Cairo Prince out of Absolutely Awesome, by Steet Cry. Absolutely Awesome’s dam (mother) produced Awesome Maria, a Grade 1 winner of $1.1 million. Third dam (maternal great-grandmother) Pretty Discreet was a Grade 1 winner and multiple Grade 1 producer whose offspring includes 2006 Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap winner Discreet Cat, a career earner of $1,694,180.
