Butterbean, a Klimt filly owned by trainer Ken McPeek’s Magdalena Racing group and William Klimashousky, finished second in four out of her first five starts from Oct. 2021 through early May 2022 and broke through in her sixth call to the post, winning a 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Churchill Downs by 1 ½ lengths on May 27.
Butterbean, a Klimt filly owned by trainer Ken McPeek’s Magdalena Racing group and William Klimashousky, finished second in four out of her first five starts from Oct. 2021 through early May 2022 and broke through in her sixth call to the post, winning a 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Churchill Downs by 1 ½ lengths on May 27.
McPeek sent the filly to Prairie Meadows for her stakes debut, and she rolled to an impressive 5 ¾-length score in the one-mile Panthers Stakes on June 11. That set her up for a tougher assignment in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks on July 9 at Prairie Meadows, but the filly proved much the best under jockey Glenn Corbett, sweeping from off the pace to take command at the top of the stretch en route to a three-length win over odds-on favorite Falconet.
McPeek bought Butterbean for only $22,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September yearling auction. She is out of the Johannesburg mare Letting Go and is from the family of Grade 2 winners Conquest Daddyo and Live Lively as well as several other stakes winners and high earning horses.
