The $400,000 Penn Mile Stakes drew an intriguing group of seven 3-year-olds for the classic turf-mile distance, including several established turf stakes winners, a runner making his first start on grass, and a colt returning to the turf after testing the Triple Crown trail.

The Shoemaker Mile Stakes headlines a loaded Memorial Day card May 25 at Santa Anita Park that features three graded stakes, and the $300,000, Grade 1 stakes drew a competitive field of nine older horses. Six of the nine entries in this year’s edition are graded stakes winners.
