Saturday is the biggest day of the year at Woodbine. The King’s Plate, Canada’s closest facsimile to the Kentucky Derby, headlines a 13-race program just outside Toronto, and we’ll go through the card looking for some value.

We’ll focus on horses with odds of 6-1 or greater on the morning line, and this includes a price in the main event. Let’s get to it …

Will a filly prevail in Saturday’s $1 million King’s Plate Stakes at Woodbine? It’s well within the realm of possibility.

Contested at a distance of 1 1/4 miles on Woodbine’s all-weather Tapeta Footings surface, the King’s Plate is restricted to 3-year-old Thoroughbreds bred in Canada, and it’s Canada’s equivalent to the Kentucky Derby. But whereas only three fillies have won the Kentucky Derby, the King’s Plate has been won by fillies on 39 occasions, including six times since 2011.

Every Sunday Noel Michaels will provide free full-card picks for a one racecard in North America. A veteran handicapper and tournament-play pioneer, Michaels also writes a weekly “Weekend Winners” blog for America’s Best Racing with a focus on key stakes races at marquee tracks. This feature will be straight-forward: full-card picks for one Sunday slate of races of his choosing.
