For over 10 years, Mike Lowery struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, but the Lexington, Ky., native was helped along the path toward sobriety and success by enrolling in the Taylor Made School of Horsemanship through the Stable Recovery program in 2021. Lowery had never touched a horse before, and it didn’t matter. Lowery says that was struck by “an overwhelming feeling of peace” when first encountering a broodmare in a stall, and he’s now supervising nearly 150 mares and foals.
“You have to love the animal, and the hustle and the grind – because that’s what this is, seven days a week, 365,” Lowery says.
America’s Best Racing in partnership with Stable Recovery has produced a multi-part video series hosted by Lindsay Czarniak taking viewers behind the scenes to learn about one of the true treasures of the Thoroughbred racing industry, the Stable Recovery program, and some of the men impacted by this powerful initiative.
