Social media content creator Griffin Johnson became part-owner of the colt Sandman during 2024 through America’s Best Racing’s A Stake in Stardom initiative. No one had any idea about the thrill ride in store for Griffin and everyone associated with the beautiful gray when Sandman made his debut in June 2024 at age 2 under the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs. Griffin was in attendance that day and he and his fans on TikTok and Instagram followed along as Sandman progressed into a leading Kentucky Derby contender during the fall, winter, and into the spring of 2025.
A win in the Arkansas Derby qualified Sandman for the 151st Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and Griffin along with family and friends made the trip to Louisville to watch on the first Saturday in May. Sandman finished a solid seventh in the Derby after making up ground in the stretch, but Griffin’s journey with the colt over many months made for a truly gratifying experience enjoyed by millions, with more chapters to come. “I think this is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” Griffin says.
