Betting Basics: Reading the Racing Program

09.01.2023

If you’re just getting into betting horse racing, thumbing open a program listing the day’s races and trying to make sense of all the information can be intimidating. But it shouldn’t be – and ABR’s Dan Tordjman has some basic tips to help get started.

Become familiar with where the race distance, surface, and conditions are located in the program and take note of the statistics for each horse’s trainer and jockey. Even more important: study the past performances of each horse to see how they performed in races leading up to the current contest. Look for recent success and also patterns of performance. And don’t overlook speed figures for each horse, which are printed in bold. The higher the number, the better.
