Speed horses are great to bet on sometimes, but not so great at other times. We’ll look at the situations in which you might want to wager on a speed horse.
Checking out the Race Projection in the True Odds module in STATS Race Lens is a good way to view how the pace of the race may play out.
The data grid has a column labeled “Run Style” that displays the general running style of each horse. E is Early (on or near the lead), P is Presser (between two and five lengths back) and Sustained (near the back of the pack) and U for Unknown (first-time starters and foreign horses). There are also the combinations of E/P (Early or Presser) or S/P (Sustained or Presser). If there is only one Early horse and no Early/Presser horses, then make sure to take a good look at the Early horse. The Race Projection comments can also be helpful in figuring the chances of the Early horses.
